Relax while working on your PC
To understand the best way to set up a computer workstation, it is
helpful to understand the concept of neutral body positioning. This
is a comfortable working posture in which your joints are naturally
aligned. Working with the body in a neutral position reduces stress
and strain on the muscles, tendons, and skeletal system and
reduces your risk of developing a musculoskeletal disorder (MSD).
The following are important body postures to maintain while
working at your computer:
- Keep your hands, wrists, and forearms straight in-line and
parallel to the floor.
- Keep your head in level, or bent slightly forward and balanced.
Generally stay in-line with your torso.
- Keep your shoulders relaxed and upper arms hanging normally at
the side of your body.
- Elbows should stay close to the body and be bent between 90
and 120 degrees.
- Feet must be fully supported by the floor or a footrest.
- Keep your back fully supported with appropriate lumbar support
when sitting straight or leaning back.
- Your thighs and hips must be supported by a well-padded seat
and generally parallel to the floor.
- Knees should be kept about the same height as the hips with
your feet slightly forward.
